Our history

Radiation and Environmental Protection Department was established in 1958. with an attempt to increase the significance of radiation protection as a scientific and practical discipline. Laboratory was founded following an accident that occurred at a criticality assembly. This event immensely changed the position of the radiation protection within the Vinča Institute. The initial objective of the Laboratory – to provide adequate radiation protection for Vinča Institute research staff, expanded with time and the Laboratory started to provide radiation protection services to other organizations and users of ionizing radiation sources all over the country and world.

Department of Radiation and Environmental Protection is a modern organization with more than 50 employees covering all aspects of radiation and environmental safety. Laboratory staff is involved in basic and applied scientific research in the area of radiation and environmental protection. In addition, the Laboratory provides independent service whose primary missions are the protection of the public, workers and the environment from ionizing radiation, and collaboration with similar organizations at the national and international levels. The Laboratory activities are focused on the safe use of ionizing radiation sources and on the contemporary technologies transfer which is based on ionizing radiation in different areas of human life.  These goals are achieved through: (1) research efforts that are in line with relevant scientific knowledge, (2) practical solutions relevant for users of ionizing radiation sources, (3) participation in educational and training activities, (4) openness, and (5) multidisciplinary and teamwork.
