The risk assessment you carry out for work with ionizing radiation should consider the potential radiation exposures an individual may receive during the course of their work (including normal and potential exposures). This helps to estimate likely radiation doses, identify whether your staff should be subject to personal dose monitoring and determine whether certain employees should be designated as classified persons.

Workplace monitoring comprises measurements made in the working environment and the interpretation of such measurements, focusing on monitoring for external radiation, for air contamination and for surface contamination in accordance with the regulatory requirements. In addition to what was said above, the purpose of workplace monitoring is:

  • Monitoring may be part of the prior radiological assessment;
  • Determination of whether radiological exposures in the workplace are under adequate control or whether operational changes have improved or worsened the situation;
  • These measurements facilitate the control of exposure of workers by early detection of deteriorating or abnormal conditions, thereby allowing appropriate remedial actions;
  • Selection of appropriate personal protective equipment;
  • Assistance in preventing the spread of contamination;
  • Provision of information that can be used to allow workers to understand how, when and where they are exposed and to motivate them to reduce their exposure;
  • Demonstration of good working practices and engineering controls (e.g., the adequacy of supervision, training, etc.);
  • Detection of failures of containment or departures from good operating procedures;
  • Classification of controlled and supervised areas;
  • Provision of a prompt and reliable alert to allow workers to evacuate to a place of safety;
  • Contribution to the dose assessment or estimation for individual or groups of workers and demonstration of compliance with dose constraints;
  • Provision of information for e planning of programmes of individual monitoring, defining operational procedures and facilities and evaluation of doses in the event of accidental exposures.

Our department is fully capable of designing and performing the workplace monitoring, as well as of analysis and interoperation of the results of workplace monitoring in various filed of application of ionizing radiation sources.

Workplace monitoring is provided upon request; the procedure includes the following steps:

  • Communication (via phone, e-mail or fax) to set the arrangement and date for testing;
  • The Laboratory staff performs the test at the client’s site;
  • As soon as the testing is completed, the report is prepared and sent to the client;
  • Invoice is sent with a test report, and the payment of a debit amount is made to the Vinca Institute bank account.
